Turtle Mountain was created in 1987 by current President/CEO Mark Brawerman. In 1990, Turtle Mountain introduced Living Lightly pints, a line of soy based, rice syrup and fruit sweetened frozen dessert products. In 1998, Turtle Mountain introduced Organic Soy Delicious, a line of soy-based frozen dessert quarts. This brand was later renamed to So Delicious Dairy Free. Turtle Mountain followed that up in 2001 with the introduction of Purely Decadent, a premium line of frozen desserts sold in pints.
Turtle Mountain’s company name was inspired by a place in Nicaragua that borders the ocean, where sea turtles lay their eggs. Natives to the area refer to the place as Turtle Mountain.[3] As part of its company mission, Turtle Mountain donates a portion of its profits to the Sea Turtle Restoration Project, an organization that seeks to protect endangered sea turtle populations around the world.
This brand is sold in quarts and is produced with a lower fat and calorie content than premium lines of dairy ice cream.

On March 7, 2007, Turtle Mountain announced a partnership with Farm Sanctuary, a national farm animal protection organization, and cartoonist Dan Piraro, the creator of the syndicated panel cartoon Bizarro. The campaign's stated intention is to "tap children's natural affinity for animals and educate them about healthy nutrition and the impact of factory farming on animals and the environment."[5] As part of the alliance, Turtle Mountain launched a brand of allergen free fruit pops, dubbed So Delicious Kidz Pops.
